Shanghai Weiyu High School was founded in 1943 as part of Li Chu-tai's Weiyu educational lineage. In 1956 it was reorganized into a public school and renamed Shanghai No. 51 High School. In 1998, the high school division moved to the Huijing area on Weiyu Road 1 in Xuhui District, while the junior high remained at the original site. Beginning in 1999, the school entered a period focused on creating an experimental and demonstrative high school, and in February 2005 it became one of Shanghai's first 28 experimental and demonstrative high schools. An International Department was established in 2002, and in May 2011 the school was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the Diploma Programme.
The school has a rich campus culture with astronomy, biology, computer science, and photography clubs, along with literature, poetry, arts, and taekwondo groups. Student media includes a school newspaper, a TV station, and a radio, providing multiple platforms for student expression. The campus hosts around 2,000 students across three grades and a substantial faculty, supporting a broad range of clubs and activities.
