The Sanlitun campus of The British School of Beijing opened in the early 2000s and the school marked its 20th anniversary in 2023. Originally the Sanlitun and Shunyi sites were run as a single institution; they were administratively separated into two campuses in 2013. The Sanlitun campus is part of the Nord Anglia Education family, which manages its operations and global collaborations. Because different records note slightly different dates for initial openings, contemporary school material and independent sources generally describe the Sanlitun campus as having been established in the early‑2000s.
BSB Sanlitun describes a broadly international community with more than 60 nationalities represented among students and families. The school runs social and educational activities to bring families together and to connect students with the local community; examples listed on the school site include service‑learning programmes and a Winter Accessories Appeal that supports the Roundabout charity. School surveys cited on the site report that a large majority of families feel welcomed and part of the school community.
The school's Parents Association plays an active role in helping new families settle and in building the home–school partnership. The association runs regular social activities such as parents' lunches, book swaps and bake sales that are intended to help families meet and share resources. It also supports school events and volunteer initiatives, acting as a practical link between parents and staff. Activities are parent‑led and promoted through the school's communications and calendar so families can sign up for or attend specific events. The Parents Association therefore serves both social and introductory functions—helping integration of new families and contributing to community‑building across the school.
The British School of Beijing, Sanlitun is a British day school for children aged 1–11, located in Beijing's Embassy District (Chaoyang), on Sanlitun Road. The school opened in 2003 and is described on the school site as the longest‑serving British school in the capital. Your child would follow the National Curriculum for England adapted for an international community; Early Years covers ages 1–4 and Primary covers ages 5–11. The campus includes a bespoke Year 1 centre and an Early Years Li Building with indoor and outdoor spaces designed for young learners. The school runs language programmes in Mandarin (including Heritage and Advanced groups) and an optional German programme for Years 1–6, and offers English as an Additional Language support where needed. BSB Sanlitun highlights curricular collaborations with organisations such as Apple, Juilliard and MIT, and embeds community and environmental projects (for example, the BSB Earth Guardians programme) into its programme.
