Founded in 1912, the Colegio Alemán de Barranquilla is the oldest German school in Colombia. It has grown into a multilingual, intercultural institution recognized locally and internationally, and it moved to its current Via al Mar campus in 2002. The school established its own facilities in 1929 thanks to donations from the German community, the Club Alemán and Scadta. It introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 2003–2004 and was recognized in 2013 as a German Auslandsschule with International Academic Excellence. It earned Microsoft Showcase School status in 2021, renewed its international accreditation with BLI 3.0 in 2022, and added an IB specialization in 2024.
The school's community is the heart of the institution, with students, parents, teachers, and administrators working together in a collaborative, globally oriented environment. The Student Council (grades 4–12) is the main student representative body, promoting leadership, democracy and citizenship. Asopadres, founded in 1969, promotes active family participation and supports educational, cultural, sports, and welfare projects. The Consejo de Padres connects families with the school and strengthens home–school collaboration; Grupo Verde leads environmental initiatives, and the Colombo Alemana Foundation (FCAB) strengthens cultural ties between Germany and Colombia.
