Spanish is the mother tongue; German is taught with a bilingual approach; English is taught as a foreign language. In Oberstufe, some subjects are taught in German (e.g., History, Mathematics, Biology), and students may pursue Deutsches Sprachdiplom I and II as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in multilingual modality (GIB).
German is taught with a bilingual approach alongside Spanish as the mother tongue and English as a foreign language. In Kindergarten, two homeroom teachers (one German-speaking and one Spanish-speaking) support language development. In Grundschule (Grades 1–4), students begin bilingual reading and writing, with some German-taught subjects such as Mathematics, Arts and Sports. In Mittelstufe and Oberstufe, English is introduced as a second language and used alongside German and Spanish in the curriculum, with opportunities to pursue the Deutsches Sprachdiplom I/II and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in multilingual modality.
Permanent immersion in German language and culture runs through the 14 school years. The program includes a three-week trip to Germany in Klasse 6 and a six-month academic trip to Germany in Klasse 10 to strengthen language skills.
Deutsche Schule Medellín is a nonprofit German international school in Medellín, sponsored by the German government and part of the German Schools Abroad network (ZfA). It is an IB World School serving ages 1 to 18 (Prekinder to Klasse 12) in a multilingual German-Spanish-English environment. The upper levels offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in a multilingual format (GIB), with TOK, CAS and the Extended Essay; some subjects are taught in German. German language learning runs throughout, with the Deutsches Sprachdiplom II (DSD II) at level B2/C1. In Klasse 6 there is a three-week trip to Germany, and in Klasse 10 a longer immersion. Graduates have access to German universities and various other international pathways, with university fairs and campus visits; leadership opportunities include MUN and related projects. The campus emphasizes nature, arts and sports, and maintains a lasting commitment to German culture, track and field, swimming, volleyball and activities.
