Deutsche Schule Medellín was founded in 1968 by a group of German and Colombian parents led by Horst Müller to implement German pedagogy in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley. Since 1979, the school has been recognized, certified and sponsored by the German government under the binational agreement between Germany and Colombia, fulfilling quality education requirements in both countries. The institution operates as part of the Corporación Colegio Alemán, a nonprofit organization with more than 200 employees, and offers 14 years of schooling from Prekinder to 12th grade with permanent immersion in German culture and language. At graduation, students may earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBO), the Academic Diploma awarded by the Colombian Ministry of Education, the Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD) at levels B2/C1, and English language certificates at levels B2/C1. The school follows a non-denominational calendar A and runs a schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.
The school fosters an intercultural community with long-standing German–Colombian exchanges and ongoing immersion in German language and culture across the 14-year Prekinder-to-12th-grade program. Its campus is described as a space for learning in contact with nature, supporting a holistic educational experience that includes arts, music and sports. Community initiatives include German exchange experiences for students that build lifelong friendships and host-family connections, and the Connect Programme started in 2024 to deepen solidarity by connecting students with other realities through DSM's Solidarity initiatives. English-language development and intercultural education are emphasized as integral parts of campus life.
