In 1984, Miss Sandra Melo started an early childhood education project that incorporated a new style of academic curriculum which allowed children aged 18 months to 4 years to learn English at levels above the then-established Colombian standards. This led to the grand opening of Gimnasio Colombo Británico (GCB) in 1994. Following a 60-year family tradition, the founders celebrated the graduation of the first seniors from GCB in 2001. Since then, GCB has delivered excellent results in the official state exam (ICFES) and has been ranked among the top 10 schools in Colombia, achieving the top rank in 2011 and 2014.
Immersion and international programs create a globally oriented school community. Immersion programs include midyear summer camps in England, Canada, and the United States for grades 7–9 and the November immersion program for grades 4–6. Since 2011, Cambridge International has been part of GCB, with Cambridge Check Point exams in fifth and eighth grade and IGCSE exams in ninth grade; Cambridge IGCSE is recognized by top universities and companies worldwide. Since 2018, GCB has pursued IB World School status (as of 2021), enabling students to graduate with both the GCB diploma and the IB Diploma.
GCB Bilingüe Internacional is a bilingual international academy for students aged 3 to 18. Cambridge International is implemented across the school from Primary through Bachillerato, with Fifth and Eighth graders taking Check Point exams and Ninth graders taking the IGCSE. Since 2021, GCB has been an IB World School, allowing graduates to earn two diplomas: the GCB secondary diploma and the IB Diploma for university entry. The campus centers on the Isaac Newton Cultural Centre, which houses Preschool, Primary, and Bachillerato libraries, plus workrooms and a Cinemateca; a terrace and central garden provide outdoor spaces for informal gatherings and experiential learning. Facilities include a bicycle track, gym, a sports Coliseum opened in 2018, and a healthy park. The school runs a broad after-school program with sports, arts, and academic enrichment, including robotics, choir, ballet, and a Talent Show. Immersion programs in England, Canada, and the United States broaden cultural understanding. Cambridge accreditation has guided the curriculum since 2011, and since 2021 graduates receive two diplomas.
