Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Gimnasio Vermont was founded on February 19, 1945 as Our Lady of Peace School by Miss María Rojas Sánchez and Magdalena González Fernández. It graduated its first class in 1956. In 1994 the school changed its name to Gimnasio Vermont and established a bilingual English program through an agreement with Saint Michael's College in Vermont, United States, and the calendar was changed to year B. Coeducation with a gender perspective began in 1997, and the first bilingual class graduated in 2004. The school has expanded with the International Baccalaureate, Mandarin as a third language, and arts and athletics; milestones include the IB building (2010), Preschool (2011), and the first IB Diploma graduates (2012), the 70th anniversary in 2015 with the Gimnasio Vermont Cultural Center and the Confucius Classroom plaque recognizing Mandarin, the first Mandarin graduates in 2017, the sports coliseum in 2018, the Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2019, and the West Wing of the Saint Michael's building in 2020.

Community

The GV school community is a vibrant and united social fabric, made up of committed leadership, curious and enthusiastic students, involved parents, dedicated teachers, alumni proud of their alma mater, active associations, and a solidarity employee fund. Together, we form an educational ecosystem that fosters holistic growth, academic excellence, and human values, building a legacy of collaboration and respect that transcends generations. GV Community links teachers, alumni, parents, and associations, including Asopadres and FonVermont, to support school life.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Gimnasio Vermont Parents Council (Consejo de Padres GV) is composed of 28 elected representatives, chosen at the General Assembly of Parents on September 6, 2023. The Council includes the Communications Committee, which supports the school's communications by creating safe spaces with respectful communications and by handling the Council's institutional email. The Council participates in governance through meetings with school leaders; representatives attended board meetings in March 2024 to discuss tuition and other charges, and the information was socialized to families via the Tarifa Educativa 2024-2025 circular. The Artistic, Scientific, Technical and Deportivo Committee included seven parents in 2023-2024 and worked on four proposals, including an earlier start of extracurricular activities and the formation of a sports club recognized by the IDRD; it also ensured traceability in payments for extracurricular uniforms. The Council led preventive and communications initiatives regarding psychoactive substances and held meetings with school authorities to implement proactive measures, reporting proposals to the Colegio and offering family support. Meetings with dignatarios took place throughout 2023-2024, with monthly or periodic sessions to discuss topics of interest and track the committees' progress.
