Founded in 1970, AIS is a non-profit school that has served the children of diplomatic and executive families in Costa Rica for more than 50 years. It offers both U.S. and Costa Rican high school diplomas, with students and faculty from more than 20 countries. The school is located in Ciudad Cariari, La Asunción de Belén, Heredia, Costa Rica. AIS emphasizes a small-school, student-centered education that supports academic and emotional development.
AIS has a diverse international community with nationals from more than 20 countries. AIS offers a wide range of after-school activities and sports, field trips, camps, and opportunities to volunteer in the community. The sports program includes high school basketball and volleyball, with competition in AASCA tournaments at the Pacific level. The National Honor Society (NHS) leads service initiatives, supporting work with local organizations such as Hogar Montiel, Fundación Cuidados Paliativos de Belén, and Fundación Hogar para Ancianos Alfredo and Delia Gonzales.
AIS is owned by a parent association to which all AIS families belong, and is governed by a parent-elected Board of Directors.
American International School of Costa Rica (AIS) is a private, co-educational, non-profit day school serving ages 3 through 18 in Heredia, near San José. The school follows an American curriculum with Advanced Placement courses and offers both U.S. and Costa Rican high school diplomas, enabling students to pursue college paths in the United States or locally. Beginning in high school, students prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT, with some taking honors and AP courses. AIS emphasizes critical thinking, writing, creativity, physical activity, leadership, and global mindedness across its programs.
