The American School of Zagreb was founded in May 1966 to serve the American community and opened on September 23, 1966 at Tuškanac 46 with 13 students and 3 staff. It moved to Zelengaj 45 in 1983, with Zelengaj 6 added in 1991 for the middle school; during Croatia's 1991 independence war, the school was evacuated and resumed classes in January 1992 with three students. In 1998 the school changed its name to AISZ and served 110 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. In 2000 AISZ moved to Voćarska 106, expanded to a full high school program by 2001, and the Bundek Park campus project began in 2017, leading to the Voćarska campus closure. The Bundek campus is an A+ energy rated building with zero CO2 emissions and power generation back to Zagreb's grid, with facilities including libraries, science labs, a gym, and a theater.
The AISZ community connects students, families and alumni through Service Learning that links curriculum to the broader community and aims to develop leadership and civic responsibility. Upper School students participate in Unity Days and Unity Trips each fall, fostering teamwork and outdoor learning experiences. The AISZ community also includes an active Alumni network and a Student Council Organization (SCO) for ongoing engagement with AISZ life and events.
AISZ is an independent, coeducational, non-profit day school in Zagreb serving ages 3–18. The PK-12 program blends an American-influenced international framework with the IB Diploma Program and AISZ diplomas, all built on inquiry and interdisciplinary learning. English is the language of instruction; world languages include French and German, while the IB offers Language A options in English, Croatian, French, German, and Chinese, and Language B options in English, French, and German (with ab initio). The school offers three high school diplomas: the IB Diploma, the AISZ High School Diploma, and the AISZ Honors Diploma (which includes a senior project). The Bridges Program supports inclusive learning, and English as an Additional Language is provided when needed. The Bundek campus is an A+ energy-rated building with zero CO2 emissions and power generation to the Zagreb grid, and houses two well-resourced libraries, three science laboratories, a fully flexible black box theater, dance and music spaces, art rooms, and extensive athletic facilities. AISZ emphasizes arts, athletics, and service through clubs and CEESA activities.
