Waldorf International School Copenhagen is the international department of Byens Steinerskole. It offers a holistic education that combines intellectual, artistic, and practical learning. English is the language of instruction in the international department. The Waldorf pedagogy aligns with the Danish Ministry of Children and Education, delivering a balanced program that values arts, crafts, physical activity, and academics. The school is an IB Primary Years Programme Candidate School with plans for full authorization in 2027 and to pursue the Middle Years Programme in 2026/27. Learning is organized around a rhythm of festivals and daily activities that connect study to nature, community, and life.
Waldorf education develops the complete person across head, heart, and hands. The program spans from kindergarten through class twelve, with teachers observing each child to tailor support to development. The curriculum offers a wide range of subjects and emphasizes integrated learning rather than rote memorization. Annual progress is based on ongoing evaluation rather than exams and grades, fostering motivation and growth. Long-term teacher–student relationships support a stable, collaborative school culture in an urban context.
Music Programme has a vibrant music life during and after school. All students in grades 1–9 play an instrument as part of a class orchestra, with weekly choir and music lessons; the entire school sings together at morning assemblies. Instrument lessons for grades 5–9 are compulsory and administered by the school, typically after school or during the day. Students choose their instrument (violin, viola, or cello) at the start of 1st grade, forming a class orchestra through 4th grade before potentially switching to another instrument. The school also runs an After-School Program for grades 0–3, with morning care, after-school hours, and activities such as drawing, board games, reading, and outdoor play in the neighbor's schoolyard playground; activities reflect Waldorf-inspired materials and seasonal rhythms. The school participates in UNICEF's Rights Respecting School program, integrating children's rights and safety, inclusiveness, and well-being into daily school life.
Byens Steinerskole, known in English as Waldorf International School Copenhagen, is an independent Waldorf (Steiner) school with an English-language international department for ages 1–14. The Danish Waldorf program is aligned with the Danish Ministry of Children and Education and follows the head, heart, and hands approach, integrating physical education, handicrafts, the arts, mathematics, and literacy. The international department delivers instruction in English to foster a global community. The school is an IB Primary Years Programme Candidate School, with plans for full authorization in 2027 and MYP candidacy for 2026/27. Founded as a parent-led initiative, it opened in 2019 and now serves around 276 students, including a 31-student kindergarten, with expansion plans and a move to a purpose-built building by 2030. Learning emphasises a rhythm of festivals and daily activities that connect study to nature, community, and life, supported by long-term teacher-student relationships and ongoing evaluation. A music programme with a class orchestra and an After-School Program enriches life; UNICEF Rights Respecting School work promotes safety and inclusion.
