Waldorf International School of Copenhagen – also known as Byens Steinerskole – was founded as a parent-led initiative to bring Steiner education to Copenhagen. The first planning meeting was held in 2017 at the Waldorf kindergarten Nordstjernen in Valby, and a support association was formed. The school opened in August 2019 on Nyelandsvej in Frederiksberg with 48 students, divided between a Danish and an international section. In 2021 the school relocated to Otto Busses Vej in the Jernbanebyen area after a brief temporary stay in 2020. As of September 2024 the school has 276 students and a kindergarten with 31 children, with expansion planned for 2025/26 and a move to a purpose-built building by 2030.
WISC presents a vibrant and inclusive learning community grounded in the Waldorf philosophy, integrating intellectual, artistic, and practical learning. The mission emphasizes collaborative relationships among the faculty, board, administration, and families, and a dedication to cultural diversity in an urban context with engagement with the local environment and an international network. The school hosts community events such as the May festival (Majfest) and regularly scheduled parent information tours (Rundvisning), reflecting ongoing family and community involvement.
The Support Association was founded in 2018 to provide financial and community-based support to Byens Steinerskole and the kindergarten, Lærkelunden. Its objectives include supporting operation, development, and long-term sustainability, and to organize festivals, lectures, workshops for children, parents, and families, fostering community and promoting Steiner education. The annual membership is 250 DKK per household. The association is governed by a board, including Anna Sandholt Busch (Chair), Søren Møller-Larsson (Treasurer), Claire Bugni, Nanna Bringstrup, and Henriette Emilie Lassen (Board Members), and inquiries can be sent to Skoleforening@byenssteinerskole.dk.
Byens Steinerskole, known in English as Waldorf International School Copenhagen, is an independent Waldorf (Steiner) school with an English-language international department for ages 1–14. The Danish Waldorf program is aligned with the Danish Ministry of Children and Education and follows the head, heart, and hands approach, integrating physical education, handicrafts, the arts, mathematics, and literacy. The international department delivers instruction in English to foster a global community. The school is an IB Primary Years Programme Candidate School, with plans for full authorization in 2027 and MYP candidacy for 2026/27. Founded as a parent-led initiative, it opened in 2019 and now serves around 276 students, including a 31-student kindergarten, with expansion plans and a move to a purpose-built building by 2030. Learning emphasises a rhythm of festivals and daily activities that connect study to nature, community, and life, supported by long-term teacher-student relationships and ongoing evaluation. A music programme with a class orchestra and an After-School Program enriches life; UNICEF Rights Respecting School work promotes safety and inclusion.
