Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

The Academy for Talented Youth runs for two years at Aarhus University, bringing Grenaa Gymnasium students together with peers from other upper-secondary schools to explore university disciplines. Students meet researchers and university students, gaining insights into what it is like to study at a university and live in a city like Aarhus. The Science Club is for students keen on natural sciences, with activities chosen and planned by the students and supported by teachers in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, physical geography, geology, and astronomy. It also provides opportunities to test experiments before larger project assignments in STX, HF, and IB.

Arts and Creative

Music is part of Grenaa Gymnasium's life with music cafés throughout the year where anyone can perform a song. Every other year, there is a theater concert where students can be on stage as musicians, actors/singers, in the choir, in the band, or in one of the many other roles; in years without a theater concert, the school choir performs at the gymnasium and in the local community. Visual Arts are integrated into daily life, with artworks from art classes exhibited at the spring exhibition and opportunities to participate in Voluntary Art to contribute to Ungdommens Vårsalon or help create sets for the theater concert. Youth Spring Exhibition (Ungdommens Vårsalon) is an annual art exhibition featuring works by young people, with Grenaa Gymnasium students often having works featured in the Copenhagen exhibition, which also involves a trip to Copenhagen.

Cultural and Language

European Youth Grenaa (EUG) is based at Grenaa Gymnasium and organizes lectures, events, study trips and debate events both at and outside the school. Grenaa Gymnasium also participates in Model United Nations (MUN) annually, providing insights into how the United Nations operates and helping you build an international network. Global Days cancel the regular schedule so students from other classes and years can collaborate to devise solutions to global issues, with the day ending in an auditorium presentation. The Global Group organizes activities with a global perspective, including fundraising around Denmark's Collection Day and inspirational workshops with Global Gymnasiums.

Social and Hobbies

Faktisk, the school magazine, is edited by students and features interviews, updates from committees, surveys, top 10 lists, short stories, and more; the editorial team meets approximately every three weeks and welcomes contributions. GG Debate Club develops debating skills and English-speaking ability; it meets once a week to discuss current topics and also organizes debate tournaments for Grenaa Gymnasium and other schools in the World Schools Debating Championship format. Democracy provides leadership opportunities through the Student Council and class-based student teams, with the Council linking to the school's committees and monthly meetings; elections are held at the start of the school year and representatives convey information between classes and the Council.

Community and Service

The Global Group coordinates activities with a global perspective, including fundraisers around Denmark's Collection Day and participation in inspirational workshops hosted by Global Gymnasiums. Operation One Day's Work (OD) invites students to help youth in other parts of the world with education by donating a day's wage and by organizing related activities at Grenaa Gymnasium, such as fashion shows and assemblies.

Leadership and Professional

The Student Council gives students a voice, with every class represented and a link to the school's committees to influence decisions big and small. There is a monthly Student Council meeting, and each class elects two representatives at the start of the school year. The student teams focus on the well-being of each class and work with teachers to foster a positive academic and social environment in the class.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Extracurricular sports activities include table tennis, yoga, step aerobics, basic training, basketball, and other disciplines; on sports days every other year there are opportunities to try activities outside of school such as stand-up paddleboarding, padel tennis, or regular tennis. The school also fields a football team that participates in tournaments with neighboring gymnasiums, and a traditional graduating-students vs. teachers football match is played the day before the exam schedule is announced. Other activities include charity runs in conjunction with Danmarks Indsamling, a Friday Café football tournament on the grass, and FIFA video game tournaments.
