Grenaa Gymnasium was established in 1961 by the municipality, with Johannes Hoffmeyer as Head of School. The Boarding School was established in 1965, HF was added in 1969, and the County of Aarhus took over in 1970. A new wing doubling the area was inaugurated in 1973, and leadership changed to Erling Christensen in 1977. The school underwent major national upper-secondary reforms in 1988 and 2005, and in 2007 Grenaa Gymnasium became an independent state-owned institution with a board. A new music and visual arts wing opened in 2014 and the Boarding School was extended in 2015; Helene Bendorff Kristensen became Head of School, the mission is "more education to more students", and the school has developed an international outlook through IB since 2003, joining the Global Gymnasiums network in 2010 and establishing the STX Global Line with Shanghai No. 8 Senior High School; English is widely used, particularly in the Boarding context.
Student life includes the Olympos student association (formed in 1961) and activities such as musicals, spring exhibitions, sports tournaments, theme days, Operation One Day's Work, and the Global Group, bringing students and teachers together across classes, year groups, and programmes. The school has an international perspective with study trips and exchanges since the 1960s, expanded through the 1970s–1990s, and in 2003 became an IB World School. In 2010 Grenaa Gymnasium joined the Global Gymnasiums network and established an STX Global Line with Shanghai No. 8 Senior High School; English is commonly used in the Boarding context.
Grenaa Gymnasium is a Danish upper-secondary school offering STX, HF and International Baccalaureate Diploma. Classes and materials are taught in English, and there is a Boarding School on campus for students who live away from home.
