Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

The school teaches in English and delivers the Cambridge International Curriculum with enquiry‑based, skill‑focused learning. The core subjects English, Mathematics, and Science are taught across the primary years with cross‑curricular projects that develop curiosity and independent thinking. Science is a practical subject with opportunities to carry out supervised experiments. Cross‑curricular projects integrate art, design, history, geography and ICT, and include field trips to Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Odense Zoo.

Arts and Creative

The school provides weekly Art, Music & Drama in the Primary School. In Upper Primary, Art, Music & Drama, Design and Technology, and Physical Education are taught, and French is introduced in Grade 6. In Secondary, Art & Design is an elective in S10–S11, and a design and technology makerspace with a 3D printer and laser cutter is available. The Cambridge ICE Award recognises achievement in creative and professional subjects including Art & Design.

Cultural and Language

Danish is taught with the Danish department of Henriette Hørlücks Skole, and OIS participates in morning assemblies with the Danish department. Danish is taught as a First Language or Foreign Language. From Secondary 10, students have more language options and may study French or German, with DELF available in some cases. Model United Nations is offered from Secondary 8, and there are cross‑cultural field trips to places such as Hans Christian Andersen Museum and the Odense Zoo.

Social and Hobbies

The After‑School Care Programme is included in tuition for P1–P4, with The Club for 4th class from Henriette Hørlücks Skole and P5. On Tuesdays, Odense Music School provides woodwind lessons in the After‑School Care Programme, with two years of instruction for P2 at no cost, and there is a musical concert twice a year. Coding and Robotics are emphasised with OIS as a test centre for KUBO and a fleet of LEGO WeDo and LEGO MINDSTORMS robots, plus micro:bits. DISNAC Athletics provides team sports such as volleyball, football, basketball, rugby, cricket and track & field, and there are class parties and a buddy system for new students.

Community and Service

OIS emphasizes community through trips such as a Copenhagen Tivoli outing and Sletten camping, with four‑day camps for hiking and team‑building. Joint Lower Secondary survival trips and Copenhagen class trips foster cross‑cultural connections. A Parents Association supports wellbeing initiatives and class events, with class representatives meeting with teachers and leadership. The school also hosts DISNAC cross‑country and touch rugby tournaments.

Leadership and Professional

Model United Nations begins from Secondary 8, with multi‑day conferences involving students from OIS and other Danish international schools. New students are welcomed with a buddy system to help them settle in. Parents can join the Parents Association and volunteer as class representatives to support events and wellbeing initiatives. Leadership and teamwork are fostered through cross‑campus trips and joint activities.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The After‑School Care Programme runs until 16:15, and cycling is encouraged as part of Odense's bike‑friendly culture. A local youth centre offers after‑school activities open until 21:00 on weekdays. Secondary students have access to renovated science labs and a technology makerspace with a 3D printer and laser cutter. DISNAC events and outdoor trips such as Sletten camping promote physical activity and well‑being.
