Languages taught are Spanish and English across all levels. The language of instruction depends on the Section and Level; the National Section uses a balanced Spanish-English approach while the International Section emphasizes English with some Spanish. In early years, language support includes English language learning (ELL) for non-English speakers and Spanish language support (SLL) for students who speak little or no Spanish. The language of communication with parents is mostly Spanish, though in the International Section written communications are provided in both languages.
The school offers bilingual education in Spanish and English. The instruction is organized into two Sections: National Section and International Section. The National Section is taught 50% English and 50% Spanish, while the International Section is taught 90% English and 10% Spanish. Language of instruction varies by grade level and section.
Immersion is structured by section and grade level. Nursery and Preschool feature Spanish full-immersion in the National Section and English full-immersion in the International Section. Pre-Kinder & Kinder reverse that arrangement, with Spanish full-immersion in the National Section and English full-immersion in the International Section. Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-6 use alternating English and Spanish instruction across a six-day cycle, with most subjects taught in one language and portions in the other. In the Diploma Program, some IB courses are offered in both Spanish and English.
Colégio Americano de Quito is a day school for ages 3–18, offering the International Baccalaureate (PYP, MYP, DP) alongside U.S. college-preparatory standards. It operates two sections: National Section (50% English, 50% Spanish) and International Section (90% English, 10% Spanish). Graduates earn a U.S. high school diploma and an Ecuadorian Bachillerato; the IB Diploma is optional and noted on the transcript. Recognized by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education, the IBO, and Cognia, the school was founded in 1939 and opened in 1940, moving to Carcelén in 1983; a new campus is planned. Facilities include a School Stadium, Secondary and Primary Coliseums, multiple soccer fields, indoor courts, outdoor track, and a weight room. The campus supports robotics and computer laboratories, BYOD from grade 6, a secure Wi‑Fi network, and libraries with print and digital resources. Extracurriculars include coding/robotics, book club, diversity club, and extensive arts and music offerings.
