The International American School began as a vision of hope by Mr. and Mr. Ashraf Wahby who wanted more for the children of Egypt than what was available at that time. Their own children were the driving force behind developing a program that grew from a nursery/play school into the higher learning community of IAS today. In 2005 construction began on a 4 fedan plot of land, 2 km past Abees Gate on the outskirts of Alexandria, and by the following fall Kindergarten and grades 1–6 were added at the new location. Since 2006 the school has expanded with doubling the classes in grades 1–3, enrollment reached about 320 students, and Grade 4 and Grade 10 were planned to lead toward graduation. The school has added facilities including a swimming pool, indoor cafeteria, gymnasium, and auditorium planned for construction by the end of 2010; all faculty hold at least a bachelor's degree, with some holding a master's degree.
The International American School is committed to sustaining a welcoming and supportive environment for children and families in its community and for those interested in joining IAS. IAS values and celebrates ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic diversity, and families joining the IAS community are expected to uphold these principles. The IAS experience is based on mutual respect and personal integrity and aims to reflect the larger society through its diversity, including various family constellations. To build cultural competency, IAS engages in dialogue about diversity, and adults and students attend conferences and workshops; the curriculum likewise explores cultural diversity and global unity.
The International American School of Alexandria (IAS) offers Kindergarten through Grade 12 on an American curriculum in English, with native-speaker staff guiding the language arts program. Classical Arabic is taught as a native language, alongside formal Egyptian National Studies, including Egyptian History, Religion, and Arabic. ESL supports students who need English language development, while French begins in Grade 1 and Spanish is offered in Grade 9. Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Ashraf Wahby, IAS started as a hopeful vision for Egypt's children and grew from a nursery into a K–12 community. In the mid-2000s land was acquired, and by 2006 the school expanded to Grades 1–6, with facility additions. Plans for a swimming pool, indoor cafeteria, gymnasium, and auditorium were complemented by new classrooms, science labs, and a library. The school emphasizes leadership, service, and character through its Honor System and co-curricular offerings, including academic, cultural, and language activities.
