Sandford International School traces its origins to the early 1940s when Mrs. Christine Sandford sought to establish an English-speaking school in Ethiopia. It began as Sandford English Community School and moved to its current site in 1949, with support from Emperor Haile Selassie I. It was one of Africa's first international schools, serving both nationals and expatriates on an equal basis. In 2001, it re-registered as Sandford International School and began offering the IGCSE Cambridge examinations and the International Baccalaureate for Years 11 and 13. The school is a co-educational, non-boarding, nursery to pre-university institution with a highly qualified professional staff.
The student body represents about 50 nations. Extracurricular activities and events foster internationalism and community engagement, with a broad program led by staff and outside vendors. MUN offers opportunities for Years 7-13 to meet students from local schools and travel to conferences around the world, developing confidence, public speaking, diplomacy, leadership, teamwork and critical thinking. The school serves Ethiopian and international families through an English-language program for students aged 4 to 18.
