Turku International School was founded by the City of Turku in 2003. Turun Normaalikoulu (Turku Teacher Training School) provides the teaching under an agreement between the City of Turku and the University of Turku. The school is administered by the City of Turku. The official language of instruction is English. The school started operating on 1 August 2003.
The school aims to develop internationally minded, caring and reflective builders of a sustainable future. It encourages exploration of knowledge across local and global contexts. It emphasizes communication and cooperation, and honesty and open-mindedness, and it fosters human and cultural diversity in a multicultural environment.
The PTA is a Parent-Teacher Association that aims to make the school a better place for children to learn. It builds community and supports TIS teachers, hosting seasonal social events such as a Back-to-School picnic, a fall costume party, a winter solstice party, and a summer/end-of-school get-together. The PTA provides fundraising support for special events and field trips and gives thank-you gifts to teachers. It also engages in discussions with parents and staff on safety, bullying, and other topics relevant to families. Involvement options include attending meetings twice a year (Zoom or in person), volunteering at events, contributing baked goods to bake sales, and emailing the PTA at tispta2023@gmail.com.
Turku International School delivers IB Diploma Programme for secondary students in Turku, Finland. The school is a public institution under the City of Turku, with the Diploma Programme taught at Turun Normaalikoulu and pre-DP year bridging to DP in English to prepare students for university study worldwide. The DP follows six subject groups, with three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus core elements Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity and Service. Language offerings include English A and B, Finnish B, French B, German B, and Spanish B. The IB campus is housed in the Turun Normaalikoulu building at Annikanpolku 9, and a library with about 10,000 items provides access to university databases. Free daily lunch is provided. CAS is a core element, featuring real-world projects and service, such as involvement with the Together association. About 95% of DP graduates proceed to universities worldwide.
