There is a Challenge Programme for gifted and/or motivated pupils.
The SMiLe-Team provides social-emotional prevention and support in Primary School for all pupils and their parents, and offers advisory support to staff. The core task is the prevention of social and emotional difficulties and, in acute need, it acts as an intervention team. It supports children, parents and teachers by identifying social-emotional needs and implementing preventive measures to improve the social climate in the classroom and on the playground. The SMiLe-Team offers SMiLe station during breaks with counselling and individual case assistance; a Time out option for overload; crisis support, conflict management and mediation; trustworthy information, counselling in educational matters, and support in family crises and child protection. It coordinates social projects and programmes (including KiVa), informs teachers and school management, and can refer to external and internal support services.
Educational Support is offered as part of a whole-school approach to help pupils develop their potential in a positive learning environment. Needs are identified individually with parental input considered essential. If reasonable accommodation cannot be provided, the school justifies the reasons. The school uses measures including Early Intervention (speech therapy and school psychologist observation), General and Moderate Support for learning needs, Intensive Support Type A/B for more significant needs, Special Arrangements for curriculum access, and Tripartite Agreements for external services. There are also Gifted and talented programmes called Challenge Programmes. Detailed information is in the Internal Guidelines for Parents and the Policy on the provision of Educational Support.
The European School Munich teaches the official languages of all EU countries through native-speaking teachers. Pupils are assigned to language sections, with the dominant language guiding the section choice. Kindergarten education is provided in the dominant language, while Primary School includes a second language and Secondary School adds a third language in grade S1; a fourth and fifth language may be chosen later. Languages available include Deutsch, English, Français, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, ελληνική, and SWALS.
School Psychology is the specialized psychological service of the European School Munich, supporting all pupils from kindergarten through the Abitur. It focuses on intervention in cases of identifiable psychological stress and works with other staff as needed. The wellbeing framework covers prevention and promotion, with annual prevention measures and age-appropriate workshops, and is part of the counselling and support network (BUT).
The protection and well-being of pupils are paramount, and every staff member is legally obliged to prevent harm and to investigate suspicions of danger. The school works in close cooperation with colleagues, parents, extracurricular organizations, and authorities when necessary. Internal child-protection officers act as the points of contact for safeguarding and comprise School Psychologists, the SMiLe-Team and Education Advisors. In cases of suspected harm, steps include observation and documentation, reporting to school management, involvement of the child protection officer, joint assessment, and adherence to confidentiality and reporting requirements. The guidelines align with German and Bavarian law and European Schools regulations.
