Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

A foundation was established in 2008 by the creators of Moderne Schule Hamburg. The foundation provides material and human resources and directs financial resources for the school's tax-deductible educational and training purposes. It promotes education by awarding scholarships up to the tuition amount for families who cannot pay full tuition. Donations to the foundation are tax deductible and can be made to support the school's activities.

Community

Students come from many countries and learn from teachers from over ten nations; English and Chinese are taught from preschool, and Spanish is available from grade 10. Culture Week occurs annually to explore different cultures, and class trips to the USA in grade 8 and to China in grade 10 provide intensive cultural experiences. Since 2016, two international partner schools—the Thaddeus Stevens School in Lyndon, Vermont, USA, and the Xi'an Foreign Language School in Xi'an, China—facilitate an annual two-week student exchange. Democratic learning underpins the community, with a Klassenrat (class council) empowering students to express themselves and participate in decision-making; the school is located in Groß Borstel, Hamburg, and has its own school bus.
