Obermenzinger Gymnasium originated in 1961 as Privatgymnasium Dr. Chmiel, founded by Dr. Gustav Chmiel, Marianne von Borries and Elisabeth Rohmer as an all-day secondary school with ancient-language and modern-language tracks. In 1964 premises were purchased at Freseniusstraße 47 and the first final exam was carried out. In 1973 administration was taken over by Ernst v. Borries; in 1980 a charitable, not-for-profit foundation, Schulverein Obermenzinger Gymnasium, was established and the school was renamed Obermenzinger Gymnasium with the Schulverein as the organizing body. The school became state-recognized in 1986 and ABIplus was introduced in 1990. The bilingual track began in 2013; since 2006 Münchner Schulstiftung – Ernst von Borries – has served as the supporting foundation; the school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011, with House 6 opening in 2021 and House 7 opening in September 2025.
The school is a small, close-knit community with about 340 pupils and 75 staff, enabling direct communication. It employs a Two-Teacher System with pedagogical assistants and has offered bilingual teaching since 2013, including a German-English track and the ABIplus qualification. Living Europe / Erasmus+ has supported European student and teacher projects since 1996, complemented by excursions and study trips to the UK, France, India, and Ethiopia. MusiKultur and other elective courses supplement a broad cultural education, with a school canteen providing healthy meals from two chefs and a team of psychologists and counsellors supporting student wellbeing.
Spendeninitiative des Elternbeirats funds elements of the new building: a large canteen, two classrooms, and a modern chemistry lab with student-experiment tables. Donations are collected via a PayPal donation page (Hier können Sie spenden!). The Elternbeirat's campaign demonstrates active parent involvement in school development through facility upgrades.
