Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Executive Council governs the school and is responsible and accountable for the vision, structure, advocacy, and accountability in the management of American International School. The Council adopts policy, plans short- and long-term goals, and approves a budget aligned with the school's mission. The corporate owner is Dr. Adelaide Araba Siaw Agyepong. Board Chairman is Dr. Peter Annor and the Deputy Chairperson is Dr. Mrs. Felicia Sackey. Other Executive Council members include Rev. Dr. F.Y. Nyarko (Chaplain / Member), Nicola Horne (Secondary Principal / Member), Richard Kwaku Awalime Esq. (General Counsel / Executive Council Secretary), and Ashley Djokoto (Elementary Principal / Member).

Community

AIS Ghana fosters community through a vibrant Student Life program that includes spiritual life, athletics, arts, after-school activities, and student council. Ghana Day is coming up soon, a day celebrated to show national pride. The AIS Student Council plans events around the school to promote unity, including movie nights, bake sales, water days, and sports tournaments. The Social-Emotional Department supports student well-being as part of the school's community.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) brings together parents and teachers to enrich AIS and strengthen home and school connections. Its objectives include enhancing and enriching the educational experience, promoting collaboration between administration and the parent community, and providing input and assistance. PTO meetings are held quarterly and more often as needed, and are open to all parents and teachers. The PTO organizes events throughout the school year to support community building and school development, and to discuss concerns raised by parents or stakeholders. The PTO leadership includes President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Elementary Representative, Middle School Representative, and High School Representative. American International School – Accra (AIS) is an independent international school offering an American curriculum with AP and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Serving students from age 2 to 18, AIS also provides a boarding facility for students aged 13 and older. The high school awards an American High School diploma by the Carnegie Unit system, with many courses offered at honors or AP levels. AIS is a registered SAT exam center and AP Center, and offers SAT/PSAT preparation along with a dual-credit option through the SevenStar Online Program. The campus includes a main building and a boarding house, with a 1:1 student‑to‑device ratio and access to Follett Destiny Library and JSTOR via ManageBac. After‑school programs and sports—soccer, basketball, volleyball—are complemented by Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Culinary Arts, and Science/Robotics activities. AIS is governed by an Executive Council led by Dr. Adelaide Agyepong, with policies guiding language, assessment, inclusion, and academic integrity.
