Campion School was founded in May 1970 by American philhellenes Thomas Campion Shortell and Betsy Shortell to provide English-language secondary education in Athens. The school was incorporated under the laws of Massachusetts and licensed by the Greek Ministry of Education, initially offering the British GCE O Levels and A Levels. In September 2002, the British A level programme was replaced by the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. Campion is named for Saint Edmund Campion, a noted educator at Oxford University.
Campion School is situated in Pallini, 16 km east of the centre of Athens, in its own purpose-built facilities opened in September 2000. There are separate Junior and Senior schools on site, managed independently. The school has a state-of-the-art soccer pitch, running track, long jump and changing rooms, as well as tennis and basketball courts. All classrooms are fitted with interactive white boards and Wi-Fi is available throughout the school. The pastoral care system places pupils in small groups with their Class Teacher (Junior School) or Form Tutors and Year Tutors (Senior/Middle/Lower School). Each pupil belongs to a House named after a legendary Greek hero, which provides focus for sports contests and other competitions.
The school has a parents' involvement structure, including a parents' support group that is very active in organising activities and fundraising. Parents are kept fully informed on the progress of their children, with full written reports compiled and sent home twice a year. In the Senior School, report cards are issued in October, February and April. Parents' Evenings are held twice per year to allow parents to talk in depth to each of their child's teachers. The parents' support group participates in organising activities and events as well as fundraising.
