Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The presence of Italy in Athens began in the late 19th century when the Greek government granted Angelo Moretti in February 1890 the authorization to open a private primary school for teaching children of both sexes. In 1954 a bilateral agreement between Greece and Italy established cooperation in education and culture. In 1956, with authorization from Greek and Italian authorities, it was established as a private school for Greek and Italian students. In 1962 the Scuola Media Statale Italiana was established, followed by the Liceo Scientifico Statale in 1971. In the 2006/07 school year the fifty-year anniversary of the Liceo's operation was celebrated. The building housing the Scuola Italiana is owned by the Apostolic Nunciature; the MAECI pays an annual rent. The Scuola Italiana is the only Italian school in Greece and is non-profit; the governing body is the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Embassy of Italy in Athens. The School operates according to the curricula of Italian schools and comprises Scuola dell'Infanzia (private kindergarten), Scuola del Primo Ciclo (Primary and Middle School), and Liceo Scientifico Statale.
