HKCA Po Leung Kuk School provides a transdisciplinary, challenging learning environment described as a happy, safe and caring school. The Inclusion Policy states the aim is to increase access and engagement by removing barriers and by fostering collaboration, mutual respect, support and problem-solving across the whole school community. Belonging, safety, self-worth and well-being are identified as core elements of the student learning experience. For students with learning support needs, an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is created and progress is tracked, with ILP records kept confidential in the School Office. Seesaw is used to support daily teacher–parent–student communication and to support mother-tongue development as part of home–school learning.
The Inclusion Policy notes the school cannot offer a full continuum of learning support programmes, but teachers differentiate instruction and implement ILPs to address individual needs. Prior to admission, the Principal meets with families to determine whether the school can address the student's needs with the resources available. ILP records are created for students with learning support needs and are confidential, stored in the School Office. The policy identifies potential areas of challenge covered by an inclusive approach, including reading, writing, mathematics, social and emotional, mental health and well-being, speech and language, vision, hearing, giftedness, physical and medical considerations. Inclusion strategies rely on collaboration among teachers, parents and specialists, with ongoing professional development to promote inclusive practice.
The school accepts students with the requisite proficiency in English to access its English-medium curriculum. Where necessary, students identified as needing additional language support may take English as a Second Language (ESL) support classes out of school at the parents' own expense. English Language is taught as a core subject in the Primary School with direct instruction and meaningful contexts. The homeroom teacher is responsible for the main language of instruction (English), with language learning in English and Mandarin integrated into the programme. Seesaw is used to support parent–teacher–student communication and to support mother-tongue development.
The school aims to provide a happy, safe and caring environment to support students' mental wellbeing, as reflected in the Inclusion Policy. Belonging, safety, self-worth and well-being are highlighted as central to the learning experience. The Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE) curriculum is delivered by specialists and class teachers, focusing on identity, active living and positive interactions. Professional development is provided for staff to promote inclusion and diversity, contributing to a supportive school climate. These elements align with the IB philosophy of holistic development of the whole child.
Safeguarding-related information is addressed through policies that emphasize a safe and caring environment and safeguarding principles embedded in school life. A Personal Data Handling Policy governs how student and parent data are collected, stored and shared, with confidentiality and retention rules. Before admission, the Principal meets families to assess whether the school can address the student's needs with available resources, and an ILP is developed to guide support. ILP records are confidential and stored in the School Office. Policy communication and bi-annual review processes ensure safeguarding considerations are reviewed and updated within the school.
