Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

Quarry Bay School uses the Primary Years Programme (PYP) as its curriculum framework and has been an IB World School since May 2010. The PYP covers ages 3–12 and offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary approach to learning. English is the medium of instruction and Chinese is taught as an additional language from Year 1 to Year 6; home languages are valued. Maths is taught by class teachers with a minimum of five hours per week, and Maths coverage is guided by year-group Maths Overviews aligned with IB and ESF scope and sequence.

Arts and Creative

Arts are provided as Visual Arts and Performing Arts (drama, music and dance); Performing Arts is taught as a specialist subject and Visual Arts is integrated into units of inquiry. The arts promote imagination, communication, creativity and collaboration and are treated as an essential resource throughout the curriculum. Progression of art skills is guided through the school's Art Skills framework.

Cultural and Language

English is the medium of instruction and home languages are valued. Chinese is taught as an additional language from Year 1 to Year 6, with reading, writing, speaking and listening emphasis and integration into mainstream units of inquiry. The Chinese department provides differentiated instruction for native and non-native speakers, with four full-time teachers, one part-time teacher and four Chinese Educational Assistants, and Chinese taught four times a week (50 minutes per session, 3 hours 20 minutes per week).

Social and Hobbies

Extracurricular Activities promote student wellbeing and include 'Keep Learning ECA' for academic enrichment and 'Be Active ECA' for sports and physical activity. Clubs run after school, are led by dedicated teachers, and require a flat participation fee. Activities operate during the school term and do not run on Public Holidays or when adverse weather conditions are in effect; external providers run most ECAs and scheduling is coordinated on site by the club coordinator.

Community and Service

QBS participates in ESF community fundraising activities, including the 'We Stand With Tai Po' ESF Fundraising Day. Communications about these events are shared through the QBS App and school channels.

Leadership and Professional

QBS runs a student leadership program that empowers Year 6 students to develop leadership, responsibility and teamwork, enabling them to make a positive impact within the school community and to embody the IB learner profile.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Physical Education is taught twice a week, with one specialist and one class-teacher-led session; staff are up-skilled to deliver consistent high-quality lessons. PSPE (Personal Social and Physical Education) emphasizes well-being, with components including Interactions, Identity and Active Living, and the school introduced an RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education) curriculum in 2019. The school uses 'Be Internet Awesome' as part of its technology safety program and is a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) school to support digital learning and responsible use of technology.
