Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Sha Tin Junior School was founded in 1988 as one of the English Schools Foundation’s (ESF) primary schools. Over the years, the school has had relatively few principals (four in its history per the Chinese site) and has grown to serve around 900 students. It remains under the governance of ESF, which runs 22 schools in Hong Kong.

Community

The school community is active and participatory, with parents, students, and staff collaborating on events and cultural celebrations. Regular events include Annual Fun Day, Chinese New Year celebrations, outings and family trips, and workshops and coffee mornings organized by the school community. The after-school extracurricular programme is also supported via signups through the school portal and coordinated with the PTA.

Parent-Teacher Association

The SJS PTA brings together parents and teachers to support student learning, well-being, and school life.
Its activities include organizing Fun Days, Year 6 graduation ceremonies, community service projects, and special family outings (e.g. Rugby 7s). The PTA also helps in classroom and curriculum projects (for example, Year 5 Market Day and Year 3 Signs & Symbols), and runs workshops, coffee mornings, and parent engagement events.

Sha Tin Junior School (SJS) is an ESF primary school in Fo Tan, Sha Tin, serving around 900 students aged 5–11. It follows the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and is part of Hong Kong’s largest English-medium school organisation. On campus, students benefit from sports, arts and drama facilities, and the programme regularly extends learning beyond classrooms through trips, excursions and camps. SJS emphasises student leadership, with roles such as Student Council, House Captains, CARE Reps and Environmental Reps. Language learning focuses on English and Mandarin, with support for home languages. The school is easily reached in the New Territories—visitors are advised to take the 69K light bus from Sha Tin Station, as there is no on-site parking. Notably, SJS highlights initiatives recognised in its IB evaluation, including the Global Goals Award Scheme and increased student engagement.
