The school was founded in September 1991 in Kennedy Town with about 200 pupils and the support of the Ministry of Education, Singapore. In 1995, the school moved to its current Nam Long Shan Road site, on land granted by the Hong Kong government, with construction funded by the Singapore government. The school later expanded to include a linked secondary campus (opened in 2012).
The school describes its community as made up of staff, students, parents and alumni who all play a part in the school’s life. It works in partnership with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and alumni network. The school website notes that parents, former students and ex-staff contribute to events and support.
The school has a voluntary, non-profit Parent Teacher Association (SIS-PTA) composed of parents and school representatives. The PTA’s objectives include promoting a sense of community, providing a forum for parents and teachers to exchange views, encouraging parent participation in school programmes and assisting in fundraising for school-related needs. Recent events organised by the PTA include an annual Spring Fair and a “Thank You Teachers’ Dinner”. The PTA also organises the “Joyful Recipes of Love” cookbook as a fundraising project, launched to mark the school’s 30th anniversary, with proceeds to charity. Volunteer parent programmes are also promoted via PTA recruitment of parent volunteers.
Singapore International School (Hong Kong)’s Preparatory Years and Primary Campus is located at 23 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong, and serves students from the two-year Preparatory Years programme through to Primary 6. The Preparatory Years curriculum is fully bilingual (English & Chinese/Putonghua with simplified characters) and supports a class-size of approximately 22 students in PY1 and PY2. In Primary, the school follows the Singapore curriculum adapted to the HKSAR context and emphasises subject disciplines, thinking and communication skills, and character development built around the values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Care and Harmony (3RICH). Campus facilities include classrooms, makerspaces, a swimming pool, outdoor playgrounds and specialised studios for art, music and drama. The Nam Long Shan campus is linked via a bridge to the Secondary section, providing continuity for families seeking through-train education.
