Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Yew Chung traces its origins to 1932, when Madam Tsang Chor-hang founded the first Yew Chung school in Hong Kong, initially serving early childhood and primary students. Over time, the school expanded its scope: in 1987 the Yew Chung International School Primary was formally established, and by 1993 the Secondary section was launched, enabling a seamless pathway from nursery through Year 13.

The school’s leadership includes the Yew Chung / Yew Wah Education Network (YCYW), guided in part by Dr. Betty Chan Po-king after she succeeded her mother, preserving and evolving the bilingual, East-West educational philosophy.

Community

YCIS Hong Kong serves a diverse international community, with students drawn from over 30 countries. The school often opens its facilities to the public through community initiatives such as the “Community Play” programme at its early childhood campus, where families can use child-friendly facilities and learn through play.

It also hosts “Empowering Parent” workshops where experts share strategies for supporting children’s development, strengthening the school-family connection. The school community is also active in fundraising and cultural events, such as the YC Gala Day, with parents, alumni, and staff collaborating.

Parent-Teacher Association

The school does not have an official PTA.

This campus also focuses on Primary education, offering a similar curriculum: a blend of the English National Curriculum with bilingual instruction (English and Mandarin). Students also engage in subjects like Chinese Culture, the arts, science, and character education. Facilities at this campus support primary learning, and students also benefit from the wider YCIS network’s amenities (science labs, libraries, arts and sports facilities) located across campuses.
