Founded in 1952 by a group of Americans living and working in New Delhi to establish an American-style school for their children. In 1960 it adopted the American International School (AIS) name to reflect growing diversity, and in 1963 moved to its current Chanakyapuri campus. In 1973, it was renamed the American Embassy School (AES) due to its primary relationship with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. In the early 1980s AES reintroduced the Advanced Placement program and added the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. A campus expansion in the 1990s upgraded middle and elementary facilities, and the school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002.
The AES community includes students, families, teachers, and staff from over 70 countries, with a global alumni network spanning decades. The community emphasizes belonging, service, and the pursuit of excellence, welcoming newcomers and preserving memories and traditions for those who move on. Alumni maintain ties with AES and form a worldwide network that reinforces the School's global community.
The Parent School Association (PSA) is an active group of parent volunteers that supports AES students, families, faculty, and staff. The PSA is run by an Executive Committee that meets monthly on the first Tuesday to plan activities for Elementary, Middle, and High School communities. Its activities include social events, coffees, and family holiday events throughout the year, plus community outreach. The PSA hosts six major events each year through its Events Committee: Community Night, Diwali celebration, International Food Fair, Holi, AES Gala, and Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day. Grade-level representatives connect families with the School, and the PSA runs the AES Tiger Spirit Shop and Spirit Cart to foster school spirit; volunteering is encouraged.
