ASB was founded in 1981 to serve expatriate families, starting with 12 students in a room at the American Consulate. In 1998 ASB moved to a purpose-built campus in Bandra Kurla Complex and was accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization, offering the IB Diploma to graduates for the first time. Facing growth, ASB expanded to a second campus in 2011 with the Elementary School moving to the new campus in 2012, and the BKC Secondary School refitted to create dedicated Middle and High School spaces. ASB remains a coeducational, independent IB day school serving Pre-K to Grade 12.
ASB's community is anchored by the Parent Community Association (PCA), which supports school activities and helps build school spirit and community. The PCA has an executive board that coordinates activities and plans social events for the school community. Volunteer roles include Grade Level Representatives (GLRs), Parent Ambassadors, and a Council of Advisors who connect parents with school leadership. Parent involvement is fostered through 'Parent as Partners' education sessions and open forums with the Board of Trustees, as well as parent interest clubs that promote learning and social connection.
The school has a Parent Community Association (PCA) as its main parent involvement body, which supports school activities and builds community. The PCA's executive board coordinates activities and plans social events for the school. GLRs are parent volunteers who disseminate information and help run larger events. Parent Ambassadors help welcome and guide new families as they transition to ASB. A Council of Advisors engages with the Board of Trustees, providing a channel for parent input on future directions, with division teams acting as a sounding board for new initiatives. Parent as Partners sessions and Parent Interest Clubs provide opportunities for families to engage with the school.
