Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

CIS counsellors understand children's developmental, social, and emotional needs to support students' well-being. They are culturally sensitive and operate as a partnership among students, the counsellor, teachers, and parents. Counseling helps build trust, explore emotions and behaviors, and set personal or behavioral goals. They share strategies to reduce stress and help students identify personal interests to support well-being. Counseling is delivered through individualized sessions, group counselling, and whole-class or grade-level sessions, with support for families in transition and CIS Child Protection advocacy services; interactions are confidential except when safety is at risk.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Learning Support ensures all students can succeed. The LS team provides in-class support across the campus to challenge and support learners. Classrooms offer differentiated experiences from PreK to Grade 12 to address most learning differences within regular classroom learning. The LS team provides targeted support for students who need occasional help or greater oversight, based on ongoing assessment. They work with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) provided by clinical psychologists to address identified needs. Parents are partners, and regular family communication supports a child's development toward independent learning.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English is the language of teaching and learning at CIS. The EAL program combines in-class support with specialized English classes to assist English language learners. An EAL teacher supports each grade from 1–8, providing daily in-class support so ELLs learn alongside native English speakers. In World Language classes (French, Hindi, Mandarin, Spanish), EAL students attend small English-language classes to further support language development; Grade 9-10 EAL students participate in the IGCSE program to prepare for the IB program. EAL teachers collaborate with homeroom and subject teachers, and CIS uses the WIDA standards and the Can Do philosophy to guide language development.

Mental Wellbeing

CIS supports student mental wellbeing primarily through the school counselling program. Counselling offers strategies to reduce stress and supports emotional regulation, relationships, and personal growth. It includes individualized, group, and whole-class sessions, with involvement of families in transitions. Interactions are confidential, with safeguarding considerations if there is risk. The approach emphasizes building resilience and helping students identify personal interests to foster well-being.

Safeguarding

CIS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its students on and off campus. The safeguarding policies reflect that commitment. All job applicants must undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the appropriate Criminal Records Bureau. CIS provides Child Protection advocacy services.
