Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is a cornerstone of Stonehill, especially within the IB program. Primary School uses Personal, Social Education (PSE) to build resilience, a strong sense of self, healthy relationships, and well‑being, with four key areas: Wellness, Growth and Development, Managing Self, and Managing Relationships. The Primary School Counsellor leads targeted PSE lessons as part of the PSE program. Well‑being is woven throughout the entire PYP curriculum. In Secondary School, the Personal and Social Development (PSD) programme develops self‑awareness, self‑management, social awareness, emotional health, child protection, sex education, and career planning; external speakers and parent workshops deepen understanding and support.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The Student Support Services in Primary School consist of Learning Support, English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Counselling. Learning Support and EAL teachers cover two grades from P3 to P8 (Grades 1–5), with the Head of Student Support Services supporting the full‑immersion early years. Co‑teaching plays a considerable role to ensure the team supports the individual needs of the learners. EAL is assessed with the World‑Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) scale, a tailored learning program is delivered, and, once bridging is achieved, learners exit the programme to study Hindi, Spanish or Mandarin. Counselling is transdisciplinary and linked to units of inquiry; sexuality education supports child protection and Kelso skills are developed to support learners' well‑being.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Primary EAL uses the World‑Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) scale to assess learners and delivers a tailored program in scheduled lessons. When students reach the bridging level, they exit EAL and may study Hindi, Spanish or Mandarin. In Secondary, English B language acquisition support is provided across speaking, listening, reading and writing, with Primary EAL entering Secondary in Language Acquisition‑English lessons aligned to IB MYP Group 2; extra weekly lessons may replace standard English lessons, and after exit criteria are met, students join English Language and Literature plus Language Acquisition in other languages for the remainder of the MYP.

Mental Wellbeing

Counselling is a transdisciplinary practice integrated with IB units of inquiry and includes sexuality education to support child protection. Kelso skills are developed to support teachers and learners. The Secondary School Counselling Team provides one‑to‑one or small group sessions addressing coping with changes, transition, self‑esteem, friendships, study skills, stress management and other concerns. The PSD curriculum in Secondary focuses on emotional health and social skills to promote a healthy, balanced life.

Safeguarding

Stonehill is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The school will reserve the right to conduct background screening, and will do so periodically for employees. It aligns with the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection.
