The Doon School was founded in 1935 by S. R. Das, a lawyer from Calcutta who later served as the Advocate General of Bengal and was a member of the Viceroy's Executive Council. Das was inspired by his experience at Manchester Grammar School in England and returned to India to establish a school modeled on British private boarding schools while rooted in Indian identity. The school was envisioned as secular and open to boys from all sections of Indian society, with the aim of serving a free and democratic India. The first headmaster was Arthur Foot, and his deputy John Martyn later became the second headmaster. Conceived as an all-boarding institution in 1935, the school has grown into a residential community of around 600 boys aged 12 to 18, housed in five main boarding houses and two holding houses.
The Doon School has one of the strongest, close-knit alumni networks in the world. The school has helped shape the careers of leaders across politics, business, science, media, and the bureaucracy around the world. Doon School embraces diversity through its pan-India intake and fosters an inclusive community of students from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
The Doon School is a longstanding all-boys boarding school in India for students aged 11 to 18. It offers a multi-board curriculum with a bespoke framework: ICSE/ISC, Cambridge IGCSE, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in the final two years. In Middle School (VII–VIII) students build foundations in language arts, global languages, STEM, humanities, arts and well-being, with emphasis on independence, self-awareness, leadership and personal development. The school is affiliated to CISCE, IGCSE and IB, reflecting cross-board offerings. The Chandbagh campus blends heritage with modern facilities, including Kilachand Library, the BML Munjal Auditorium and the Rose Bowl open-air theatre; a Sports Complex includes a heated pool, gym and floodlit courts. Centres of Excellence for Drama, Creative Writing and Critical Thinking, plus a Music School and an Art and Media Centre, support creative and intellectual development. Community service through Round Square and extensive outdoor expeditions further enrich learning.
