Hillcrest follows U.S. curriculum standards and teaches in English. When staff are available, courses in grammar, writing, and history are offered in the mother tongue of non-native English-speaking students. The school offers College Board Advanced Placement courses in English Language and Composition, Calculus AB, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Comparative Government and Politics. The NWEA MAP Growth tests are administered for grades 1–8; PSAT 8/9 is given to grades 8–9 and PSAT/NMSQT to grades 10–12; SAT and ACT are offered each semester, but not required.
Facilities include a band room and dedicated drama and art classrooms. Extracurricular opportunities include music and clubs. The campus also supports arts-related activities through drama and visual arts spaces as part of student life.
Instruction is in English with courses in the mother tongue offered for non-native English speakers when staff are available. Papua's cultural experiences include field trips to observe coral reefs and local ecosystems, and an annual two‑week high school village stay to study different ways of life and help with community development. The school serves Indonesian and international students from multiple nationalities, reflecting a diverse community.
Extracurricular opportunities include athletics, music, and clubs. Middle and high school sports teams include volleyball, basketball, futsal, and outdoor soccer. Clubs and other social activities are part of student life.
Students receive an award for each year they complete more than 30 hours of community service. Community service focuses on the wellbeing of the HIS, expatriate, and national communities and is voluntary with no remuneration.
National Honor Society (NHS) membership recognizes scholarship, character, service and leadership. The Student Leadership Initiative Committee (SLIC) is a Grade 12 body that plans weekly chapels and regular spiritual emphasis events, and there is a Student Council for student-led activities. Alumni have matriculated to universities around the world, illustrating college-preparatory outcomes.
Athletic facilities support sports such as volleyball, basketball, futsal, and outdoor soccer. The campus includes a clinic and Physical Education/Health (P.E./Health) is part of graduation requirements.
Hillcrest School is a Christian day school in Sentani, Papua, offering an American-based curriculum. The program follows U.S. standards and uses AERO for core subjects, integrating a Christian worldview. Bible is used in social studies and science; every student takes a Bible course each semester with weekly chapels. Instruction is in English, with Indonesian language included; ELL support and mother-tongue instruction offered when staff allow. Pre-1 to 5 are classroom-based; grades 6–12 are departmentalized, with offerings in English, math, science, social studies, and languages; French, Korean and Spanish offered when staffing permits.
