The Hillcrest School began as Sentani International School (SIS) in 1958, established by the Christian and Missionary Alliance to educate children of C&MA workers. The Pos 7 hill campus once housed General Douglas MacArthur's staff during WWII, and SIS later included children from other missions. In 1987, as SIS students reached high school age, an inter-mission high school was established as Hillcrest International School (HIS). In 1991, SIS was reorganized as an inter-mission school, and in 1995 SIS and HIS were consolidated under a single Board of Directors. In 1999, the Pos 7 campus closed and the elementary/middle program moved to the high school site; in 2014 government regulation changes prompted changing the name to Hillcrest School.
The school community offers a wide range of activities to help students become well-rounded and prepared for life after school. High school activities include Friday night games against area schools, Friday night meals, a Spiritual Emphasis Weekend, a Christmas Banquet, a Talent Show, Spirit Week, and Chapel. Elementary and middle school activities include weekly soccer, skate nights, a Fun Fair, Track and Field Day, Chapel, Spiritual Emphasis Week, and Missions Emphasis Week. Student life emphasizes togetherness, with students forming bonds that can last a lifetime.
