NZSJ focuses on the whole child, using play-based learning for the early years and enquiry- and project-based learning for older students. Learning is personalised to support each student's curiosity and growth. The school follows the New Zealand Curriculum, guiding a well-rounded, inquiry-driven approach.
Arts and Music are taught annually at every level by specialist teachers. The Arts curriculum encourages creativity through sketching, drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. The arts room is bright with natural light and provides a space for creative exploration. The Music curriculum combines singing, music appreciation, movement to music and a range of instruments, with older students able to join choir or Kapa Haka.
English as an Additional Language is offered with a personalised approach. Students are grouped by reading and writing ability for targeted support, with experienced teachers addressing needs at all levels. Language learning is integrated into classroom activities to promote real-world language use and a sense of belonging.
After-School Activities (ASA) are a valued part of NZSJ life. Extracurricular activities build different skill sets, confidence and resilience.
NZSJ Whānau WhatsApp Community connects parents and supports involvement in school life. The Whānau offers opportunities to start interest groups and to volunteer, including volunteering in the school library.
NZSJ's Pre-University Programme for Grades 11–12 provides university pathways and develops leadership and professional skills. Students choose between streams in English and Social Sciences or Mathematics and Science, with integrated and stream-based classes. The programme builds leadership, critical thinking, research, and communication abilities.
PE and Sports are central to NZSJ's well-being; all grade levels participate in regular PE with a specialist PE teacher, including swimming in the on-campus pool, and students also engage in fitness activities with their classroom teachers. They are encouraged to participate in sports through the school and local clubs. The campus features two large playgrounds, multi-purpose courts, a swimming pool, a library, and upgraded science and Art & Music rooms to support physical and mental well-being.
