Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Pelangi School Bali is run by the not-for-profit Yayasan Cahaya Pelangi Bali. It was founded in 2006 by two Americans, Dawn and Jennifer, who were married to Indonesians and had young children, to provide a bilingual education in Ubud. The doors opened on 1 August 2006 with twelve students, growing to forty by year end. The founders aimed to welcome expatriate, Indonesian and mixed-heritage children in an inclusive environment. Today Pelangi serves about 200 students with a 60-member team, and the school consolidated two sites onto a single campus after a generous gift in 2013.

Community

Pelangi School is a community-oriented school with a diverse student population. Our global community offers rich opportunities for cultural sharing and every person is valued within the school and local community. Pelangi students actively participate in initiatives and fundraising with local organizations, and staff lead outreach programs such as the Pelangi Environment and Education Program (PEEP), Super Sehat, Kids Protect – I Feel Safe, and Yayasan Anak Unik. Environmental and charitable work includes senior students building sanctuaries for the Maleo in Sulawesi, turtle releases and mangrove planting in Bali, and a school recycling program.

Parent-Teacher Association

The PPCA (Pelangi Parents & Community Association) is a parent-run group that meets regularly throughout the school year, providing a link between the school, the students, the parent community, the leadership team and the school's yayasan board. The association is active in organising social events and in raising monies for both the school and charitable projects in our community. All parents automatically become members when joining the school. The PPCA welcomes parents to join meetings and invites them to become involved as an interested parent. Representatives from PPCA are happy to meet with new parents and help them settle into the school community.
