Sunrise School was founded in 2000 by a group of concerned like-minded parents who were unable to find a school with the quality of teaching and care they wanted for their children. These parents had a diverse background but shared a vision to create a community school that develops the whole child socially, emotionally and intellectually while nurturing their spirit. Yayasan Membina Api Kasih Kasih (MACK) or To Cultivate the Fire of Compassion Foundation is a Bali-based nonprofit involved with Sunrise School and Matahari Terbit Centre in Kerobokan, Bali. According to its Articles of Association, the foundation commits to providing educational programs both formal and informal, researching and developing projects in education and environmental science, establishing children's libraries, and collaborating with other educational institutions in teacher training, professional development and resource development.
Sunrise School provides a safe, equitable, and caring learning environment where learners engage intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. The school promotes lifelong learning and an integrated experience that balances freedom and structure, with a strong emphasis on the creative arts and environmental sustainability. Being a member of Sunrise School means belonging to a community described as an extended family, with programs and values carried throughout the curriculum and beyond. Community outreach and service are part of learning, including trips such as visits to mangrove forests to pick up rubbish.
Sunrise School Bali is an international community school founded in 2000 by parents who sought a nurturing, inquiry driven education. The school teaches in English and Indonesian and offers a blend of international and Indonesian curricula. Early Years follow the IEYC, Year 1 to 6 study the IPC, and Year 7 to 9 follow the IMYC; Indonesian standards are guided by Kurikulum 2013 and Kurikulum Merdeka. Learning is thematic and hands on, with beach clean ups, visits to the Safari Park, chocolate production, and school gardens teaching composting and sustainable farming. The campus emphasizes outdoor, garden based learning: a waste water garden, ponds, a stream, a beehive, chickens, and extensive vegetable and flower plots. The school runs after school activities across arts, sports, science, and cooking, alongside daily mindfulness and movement and weekly yoga. Sunrise is supported by Yayasan MACK, a Bali based nonprofit involved in education and community projects.
