Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Surabaya European School was founded in 1997 as the first Montessori school in Surabaya with an AMI-trained teacher. In 2001, in collaboration with the British International School Jakarta, the school adopted the British National Curriculum. SES progressed to Cambridge accreditation in 2011 and administered its first on-site Cambridge examinations that year in a newly constructed campus. From a class of seven children, including the founder's own, SES has grown to around 170 students representing 17 nationalities, offering education from Montessori-age 3 through IGCSE in Years 10-11 and A Levels in Years 12-13, while maintaining a family atmosphere and a focus on each student's educational and emotional growth.

Community

SES is proud of its family-like atmosphere, small size, and ongoing parental involvement, which fosters communication about each student's progress and a strong sense of belonging. The school currently represents 14 nationalities in its student body, and new families quickly connect with the community. The SES Community celebrates diversity through annual events such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, Easter, and Eid al-Fitr, and whole-school meetings occur every two weeks to celebrate achievements and explore social and global themes. Alumni stay connected globally, with former students attending institutions such as Phillips Academy, St Georges' School, and United World College Singapore.
