Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Canadian Academy opened on September 13, 1913 as Canadian Methodist Academy with 13 students. It was renamed Canadian Academy in 1917. The school purchased land on Nagamine Heights and opened Gloucester Hall, a boarding dormitory, in 1929, inaugurating a long-running boarding program. The campus moved to Rokko Island in 1990 after outgrowing Nagamine Heights, and the school endured a WWII closure from 1942 to 1952. Canadian Academy became an IB World School with the Diploma Programme in 1980 and added the Primary Years Programme and Middle Years Programme in 2011; the centennial was celebrated in 2013.

Community

With over 40 nationalities represented, Canadian Academy maintains a diverse learning community that includes families and alumni who remain actively connected to campus life. The CA Community emphasizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, focusing on creating a safe, welcoming environment and involving all community members. Life in Kobe describes the Rokko Island campus and access to culture, nature, and urban experiences in and around Kobe. The school fosters a sense of belonging through a network of families and alumni who participate in events and campus life.

Parent-Teacher Association

The PTA has been part of the Canadian Academy community since 1920. It helps foster community spirit and creates social and fundraising opportunities, and it facilitates dialogue among parents, faculty, and students. PTA meetings are open to all CA families and faculty and are generally held on rotating days in the morning each month. The PTA contributes to the school through the Artist in Residence program, hosting the International Food Fair, the ES Fall Fest, the Booster Club, the Parent Partner organization, lasting gifts, and the Outstanding Graduate award. The PTA Executive Board for 2025-2026 includes President Maiko Gardiner-Elko and Vice President Becky Giles. Volunteer opportunities are available through the PTA volunteer form.
