Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

GIIS Tokyo Seishincho Campus adopts the Global Indian International School's 9GEMS holistic education framework to promote well‑rounded development, including social‑emotional learning through elements such as personality development and mindfulness. The Happiness Index is used to gauge student happiness as a proxy for well‑being and its link to social‑emotional development and academic outcomes, using questionnaires, student and parent feedback, attendance data, and participation in activities. GIIS Healthline provides a confidential channel for students and parents to connect with the school counsellor to support wellbeing on issues such as anxiety, family and social concerns, and other wellbeing matters. Counsellors work with teachers and parents to identify obstacles to learning, assess student learning and behavior, and coordinate with other resources to meet student needs. Mindfulness and personality development are integral to the 9GEMS framework, supporting SEL alongside values, leadership, and other holistic domains.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school does not publicly disclose information regarding Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision, including which kinds of SEN are supported or whether GIIS Tokyo Seishincho is a specialist SEN institution. English Language Learning support for non‑native speakers is provided through the English Language Proficiency Programme (ELPP), which includes AEPP (Academic English Preparatory Programme) for Grades 6–8, English Language Support (ELS) for primary years, and English as a Secondary Language (ESL) for higher grades, along with in‑school and after‑school English supports. AEPP is designed for Grades 6–8 across CBSE, CLS, and PYP curricula to strengthen advanced language skills. In the Primary years, In‑School English Language Support (ELS) provides targeted language assistance, and English as a Secondary Language (ESL) covers Grades 6–12 for international curricula to facilitate a smooth transition to English‑medium instruction. ELPP thereby offers structured stages and language support integrated into the curriculum and after‑school programmes; however, explicit SEN‑specific programmes beyond EAL are not publicly disclosed.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The English Language Proficiency Programme (ELPP) at GIIS Tokyo is a research‑based, internationally aligned programme designed to build fluency and confidence in English for non‑native speakers. ELPP is aligned with the CEFR and incorporates the Cambridge Global English Series to promote international communication and critical thinking. Key ELPP initiatives include After‑School English Support for KG and Primary, Academic English Preparatory Programme (AEPP) for Grades 6–8, English Language Support (ELS) for Primary, and English as a Secondary Language (ESL) for Grades 6–12. For Pre‑Primary years, ELPP provides foundational English development through vocabulary, grammar, and play‑based activities; in Primary years, ELS and after‑school supports reinforce classroom language learning; in Secondary years, AEPP and ESL support advanced English across curricula. ELPP is integrated across curriculum and after‑school programmes to enable non‑native speakers to engage across GIIS Tokyo's range of curricula.

Mental Wellbeing

GIIS Healthline connects students and parents with the school counsellor to support mental health and well‑being, including issues related to family, social concerns, anxiety, and academic pressures. Healthline is a confidential channel available to students and families, with counsellors responding to requests and providing support for emotional and physical wellbeing. Counselors provide counselling, assist parents with educational decisions, assess learning and behavior, and coordinate with teachers and other community resources to meet student needs. The Happiness Index contributes to mental wellbeing by measuring happiness as a driver of SEL and academic engagement. Mindfulness and personality development, as part of the 9GEMS framework, further support SEL and students' emotional growth.

Safeguarding

GIIS Tokyo campuses implement a comprehensive safety and security system, including biometrics‑based entry controls, facial recognition, secure identification cards, and hundreds of CCTV cameras to monitor movement and safeguard students. There are 24×7 security guards at campus gates, with strict access controls and background checks for staff and personnel who interact with students. Regular safety drills, including intruder drills conducted with local authorities, are part of the safeguarding protocol. Campus facilities include a Yoga Room and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Universal Values, reflecting a holistic approach to wellbeing and values‑based safeguarding. The overall safeguarding emphasis is to keep students safe on campus and provide transparent security measures for families.

GIIS highlights GMP’s “5 pillars,” including the Excelerate Programme, Multi-faceted Learning, iPlay Programme, iCare Programme and a Future Ready Programme. For admissions planning, GIIS publishes a Tokyo fees page that includes the GMP fee structure and notes that each academic year consists of four terms.
