Boarding, Uniform and Food

Daily life details and school culture

Boarding Arrangements

HiGA provides a full-board dormitory system on campus. Each dormitory house accommodates 10 students from different grade levels and nationalities, with rooms available for single or double use and a shared living room. The dorms are secure, with separate male and female houses and staff on duty to support, counsel, and guide students. Meals are provided three times daily, seven days a week, and are included in the dormitory fee; there is a dormitory curfew at 18:30 and lights-out at 10:30 pm.

Uniform Requirement

Uniforms are required for ceremonies such as entrance and graduation. Spring, fall, and winter uniforms are blazer jackets, and the summer uniform is a short-sleeved polo shirt. Uniforms are not required for daily classes or dormitory life except on ceremonial days.

Food Options

Three meals a day are served in the cafeteria, seven days a week, and meals are included in the dormitory fee. The cafeteria uses local ingredients, and vegetarian or other dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice.

House System

Pupils live in dormitory houses designed for 10 students from different grades and nationalities, with rooms available as single or double. Houses are secure and sex-segregated, with house staff (including a housemaster or house supporters) on duty to support students. Dormitory events are organized with input from both staff and student leaders (e.g., 10th grade dormitory sub-leaders).

Governance and Ownership

HiGA is a public IB World School (state-run) operated within the Hiroshima Prefectural education system. It is designated as a state school offering the IB program and boarding; it is not part of a private school group.

Hiroshima Global Academy (HiGA) is a public boarding junior and senior high school in Osakikamijima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea, about 1.5 hours from Hiroshima. The school offers the International Baccalaureate: the Middle Years Programme (Grades 7–10) and the Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12). HiGA supports learning in both English and Japanese, and notes that some DP subjects can be studied in either language depending on a student’s ability; it also provides individualized Japanese language courses. Student life includes dormitory living across grades and nationalities. After-school, students can join A4LC clubs such as science, sports, instrumental ensemble (big band jazz), and an art-and-technology group; a student A4LC team has competed in FIRST LEGO League and qualified for a national competition.
