Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

HiGA is an IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. The school provides instruction in English and Japanese, and students can take all classes in English. Non-native Japanese speakers receive language support with native Japanese and native English teachers who collaborate across subjects. The Japanese National Curriculum is synergized with the IB, and the program includes a social, emotional, and ethical learning strand to support well-being, peace, and sustainability.

Arts and Creative

Specialist subjects include Visual Arts, Music, Design (Technology), and Design (Home Economics). Visual Arts emphasizes discovery, exploration, and language-informed reflection, with a process journal documenting the production. English language acquisition is taught in English, with differentiation by ability.

Cultural and Language

The school uses English and Japanese as languages of instruction. International students joined the learning community, with the school welcoming international students since 2022. Dormitories host 10 students from different nationalities, with male and female houses separated and staff on duty to support life and learning. International students participate in cross-cultural activities, including kendo exchanges, and the Osakikamijima environment supports global learning about peace and sustainability.

Social and Hobbies

After-school activities are available, and students participate in the Activity for Life program. Dormitory life includes social events and staff support, with a typical weekday featuring meals, study, and social time. International students join physical education and cultural exchange activities, such as martial arts.

Community and Service

HiGA is located on Osakikamijima in the Seto Inland Sea, with learning opportunities tied to sustainability and local industries. Students learn about the lasting value of peace by observing Hiroshima's post-war reconstruction and participating in local ceremonies and programs. Home Economics units connect students with the community, including interactions with the Osaki Welfare Society's day services for the elderly.

Leadership and Professional

Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) form a core element of the Diploma Programme, with planning, experiences, reflections, and an in-depth project evaluated as part of graduation. The College Counselor provides individualized career guidance, holding weekly meetings with students, arranging overseas university visits, and coordinating with universities and scholarship organizations for information sessions. The Principal emphasizes a learning community that combines IB inquiry with cross-grade, cross-cultural dorm life to develop leaders for the future.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Each dormitory house accommodates 10 students from different grades and nationalities, with single and double rooms and a shared living area. The dorms are secure, with separate male and female houses and staff on duty to support students. Meals are prepared with a focus on Japanese cuisine by a nutritionist and cafeteria staff, and dorm facilities include traditional Japanese baths and western showers along with laundry facilities. House staff, including a dedicated housemaster and other staff, support student life and well-being.

Student life includes dormitory living across grades and nationalities. After-school, students can join A4LC clubs such as science, sports, instrumental ensemble (big band jazz), and an art-and-technology group; a student A4LC team has competed in FIRST LEGO League and qualified for a national competition.
