Facilities

Resources and spaces that support learning and development

Facilities Overview

HiGA is located on Osakikamijima Island in the Seto Inland Sea. The island features citrus groves, woodlands, beaches, and hills that support experiential learning in a local context. The school runs a full board dormitory system with dorm houses designed for 10 students from different grades and nationalities. Dorm rooms are single or double occupancy, and a shared living room provides a social space. Dormitories are secure with infrared sensors, security cameras, electric lock gates, and fences; entrance is through a staffed administrative building. Male and female houses are separate, and house staff are on duty to support, counsel, and guide students. Hiroshima is less than two hours away for field experiences and broader learning contexts.

Sports Facilities

Kendo is practiced as part of the physical education program each year, and in high school international students join the lessons to foster cultural exchange through martial arts. After-school activities are available and students may use school facilities until a set curfew. The school has hosted demonstrations and events in sports, including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) with a professional racer. The island location supports outdoor and water-based activities as part of the experiential learning environment.

Academic Facilities

HiGA is an IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. The language learning pathways are designed to develop proficiency in both Japanese and English, and all classes can be taken in English. The Japanese National Curriculum is synergized with the IB, providing locally rooted knowledge with a global orientation. Native English and native Japanese teachers support language learning; all teachers serve as language instructors to assist students in classes and daily activities. CAS is a core element of the Diploma Programme and is assessed through planning, experiences, reflections, and a final project.

Extra-Curricular Activities

HiGA students participate in a variety of activities in the local community, across Japan, and around the world. The school supports international opportunities such as Tobitate! series and the TOMODACHI program to the United States. CAS experiences include pottery, traditional Japanese tea ceremony, beach cleanups, and other community projects. Dormitory life includes events organized by dormitory sub-leaders and ongoing staff support for student life. Kendo and other physical education activities are part of extracurricular experiences.

Student life includes dormitory living across grades and nationalities. After-school, students can join A4LC clubs such as science, sports, instrumental ensemble (big band jazz), and an art-and-technology group; a student A4LC team has competed in FIRST LEGO League and qualified for a national competition.
