Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

HiGA opened in April 2019 as an integrated middle-high boarding school on Osakikamijima, Hiroshima. It delivers International Baccalaureate education through the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. Middle school year groups are planned at about 40 students with classes of around 20 students; high school year groups are about 60 students. The Diploma Programme is taught in English, French or Spanish, and the first cohort progressed to universities in March 2025, domestically and internationally.

Community

HiGA is a learning community rooted in local context with a global vision. The school maintains an active student life through news and events channels including The HiGA Times and an annual events calendar. HiGA operates a Global Network offering international exchanges and study opportunities such as Ruthin School in the United Kingdom, training in Cebu (Philippines), Fiji, and Indonesia, as well as domestic university visits and European study tours. The campus is a full-boarding environment on Osakikamijima, supporting a diverse, multinational student community.

Parent-Teacher Association

HiGA has a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) that runs an annual General Assembly, grade-level meetings and class observations. The PTA holds events and information sessions to connect families with school staff, including online access for participants who cannot attend in person. For example, the 2022 PTA activities included the General Assembly, grade-level meetings, and classroom observations.

The school offers the International Baccalaureate: the Middle Years Programme (Grades 7–10) and the Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12). HiGA supports learning in both English and Japanese, and notes that some DP subjects can be studied in either language depending on a student’s ability; it also provides individualized Japanese language courses. Student life includes dormitory living across grades and nationalities. After-school, students can join A4LC clubs such as science, sports, instrumental ensemble (big band jazz), and an art-and-technology group; a student A4LC team has competed in FIRST LEGO League and qualified for a national competition.
