Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

India International School in Japan (IISJ) was created to meet the needs of the Indian diaspora in Japan and is the first and oldest school serving this community. It opened in 2004 with an initial enrollment of 27 students. In 2007, with enrollment rising toward 1,000, IISJ moved into its current Tokyo premises. There are two campuses, the Tokyo campus at Sengoku, Koto-ku, Tokyo, and the Yokohama campus at Kirigaoka, Midori-ku, Yokohama. CBSE accreditation was granted in 2010, International Baccalaureate classes were added in 2015, gakko hojin status was granted in 2016, and in 2019 IISJ was designated a MEXT International School.

Community

IISJ is described as a neighborhood school where many students walk or ride their bicycles to campus, creating a sense of belonging. The school offers a broad range of extracurricular activities and after‑school clubs, with an extended‑day option for younger students. IISJ hosts and participates in community events, including the IIMUN conference hosted at the Tokyo campus and Hindi Diwas celebrations at the Indian Embassy. Graduation ceremonies take place for Kindergarten students, and senior secondary graduates, and the school calendar lists events such as the IISJ College Fair and other year‑round activities.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parents Association (PA) operates in partnership with the Director of the School and staff to encourage interaction between families and the School, support the curriculum, and improve safety. The PA coordinates programs and projects to support or enrich the curriculum, assists with increased awareness of school safety issues, and organizes fundraising to support programs, equipment, and services. Parents with children currently enrolled are automatically members of the PA. There is a PA Board, and interested parents can contact pa.tokyo@iisjapan.com to join. Volunteer opportunities include School Bus Monitors and Street Crossing Monitors, with library volunteering and other roles welcomed.
