Nagoya International School was founded in 1964 by parents and community members as a not-for-profit international school to provide English-language education. The school opened its permanent Moriyama campus in 1968 after community support and land acquisition. Over the years the campus expanded, including the Wing Building opened in 1999 and the East Building completed in 2020, as part of ongoing modernization. Headmasters have included Charles Barton (1993–2007) and Matthew Parr (appointed 2012), and the school earned CIS and WASC accreditation and implemented the IB across PYP, MYP and DP. In 2024, Nagoya International School celebrated its 60th anniversary.
NIS describes itself as a diverse community built on strong parent partnership through the Parent Partners program, which includes Outreach, Transitions, and the Family-Staff Association (FSA), the latter formerly known as the PTA. The ACCJ/NIS Walkathon is a long-running community event that unites international and Japanese participants to raise funds for local charities; it began in 1992 and has moved venues over the years, with 2023 returning to Meijo Park. NIS hosts Chubu Perspectives Discussion Series II on global and local issues, with panel discussions conducted in English (with translation available), reflecting the school's commitment to cross-cultural dialogue. NIS marked its Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary in 2024 with events including a dinner at Hilton Nagoya and related activities.
The NIS PTA is now the Family-Staff Association (FSA), a volunteer body that supports students, teachers and families. An Executive Committee includes a President, Co-Vice Presidents, Co-Treasurers, Co-Secretaries, a Parent Partner liaison to the Board, Co-Events Coordinators, the Head of School, and a Staff Representative; the Committee meets monthly. The Annual General Meeting is held each May/June, and all parents are members of the FSA. The FSA coordinates a broad calendar of events, including orientation or welcome events, the Holiday Bazaar, Games Night, and language or cooking classes, and it supports or runs school photo days and graduation ceremonies. FSA volunteers also contribute to communications by sharing news in the NIS Sunday enewsletter and on Classlist. The Parent Partner program complements this by connecting families to the school and supporting transitions for new families.
