The Okinawa International School was founded in April 2003 in Naha to provide English-language preschool education. In August 2005, enrollment growth prompted a move to a larger site in Naha's Sobe district and the school opened an elementary division; a 1-year-old class began in September (the program now accepts children from age 2). The elementary division was established in 2006, and in May 2008 the school became a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP); in July 2011 it became Okinawa's first IB PYP-certified school. A separate annex for middle and high was opened in 2012, the middle school earned MYP certification in 2016, and in 2019 the campus moved to a new Nanjo City site; in 2020 PST Academy was established and Okinawa International School added the Diploma Programme (DP). The school celebrated its 23rd anniversary on December 3, 2025.
OIS operates across two campuses: the Naha Campus and the Nanjo Campus located at 143 Fusato, Tamagusuku, Nanjo City, Okinawa. The Nanjo Campus sits on a hilltop with facilities including a library, a laboratory, a gym, and an auditorium, and it offers accommodation options such as homestay arrangements for international students. The school hosts community and cultural events such as the OIS Festival (a festival with food, bazaar, games, and stage performances welcoming the local community) and open-campus events for prospective families. Open Campus and information sessions are regularly held to engage current and prospective families, with entries describing campus visits and family participation. The school's community has grown with a substantial share of relocated families from outside Okinawa, reflecting its IB continuum appeal.
The school's Parent-Student-Teacher Association (PSTA) coordinates a range of community resources and activities. PSTA oversees the campus library, which is described as having an abundant book collection and digital resources to support IB inquiry-based learning. The association also supports student-life aspects such as accommodation options, including homestay and boarding considerations for international families. PSTA-relevant events include the OIS Festival, a major annual community festival with food trucks, bazaar activities, games, and stage presentations, and student-led initiatives such as bake sales and fundraising activities by DP2 students. For families, the school maintains a dedicated For Parents section with calendars, information sessions, and open-campus details to facilitate involvement.
Okinawa International School (OIS) opened in April 2003 and provides education from preschool through high school across its programs. OIS is an IB Continuum School. It became authorized for IB PYP (2011), IB MYP (2016) and IB DP (2020), making it Okinawa’s first and only school offering the full IB pathway. In the elementary years, students learn through the IB PYP approach and complete a PYP Exhibition, presenting inquiry learning. OIS also highlights a local-language element in elementary school by offering “しまくとぅば” (Okinawan language) classes. At high school level, OIS offers an IB course and an additional International Liberal Arts (ILA) course option.
