Okinawa International School (OIS) holds International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation across the continuum: Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). The school earned IB PYP certification in July 2011 and became an IB MYP certified school in July 2016. In December 2020, OIS was authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme. OIS is the first and only IB continuum school in Okinawa, providing a single IB framework from early years through high school. The IB is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organization, a globally recognized authority in international education that emphasizes inquiry-based learning and international-mindedness. Public information from the school's IB pages confirms the PYP, MYP, and DP authorizations and notes the continuum status.
Public information on the school's site shows student achievements and school events, but there are no school-level awards listed for the past five years. For example, a February 2025 post highlights a student receiving the Okinawa Prefectural Students Award for robotics, which is an award to the student, not the school. This demonstrates the site's emphasis on student recognitions rather than school-wide accolades. The site also maintains a 23rd anniversary post (December 2025) celebrating the school's history, which is separate from awards.
Okinawa International School (OIS) opened in April 2003 and provides education from preschool through high school across its programs. OIS is an IB Continuum School. It became authorized for IB PYP (2011), IB MYP (2016) and IB DP (2020), making it Okinawa’s first and only school offering the full IB pathway. In the elementary years, students learn through the IB PYP approach and complete a PYP Exhibition, presenting inquiry learning. OIS also highlights a local-language element in elementary school by offering “しまくとぅば” (Okinawan language) classes. At high school level, OIS offers an IB course and an additional International Liberal Arts (ILA) course option.
